Re: what type of film media? First, "film" or "Video"? I presume you mean what flavor of "video" to choose? You're not shooting on film, right?
Second, DVD is the storage medium... in other words, you shoot (capture) in beta or miniDV, etc, then after editing you reproduce it on DVD's. So, I'd say, shoot on miniDV tapes. This can be as simple as your household palmcorder, or as complex as renting / borrowing / buying a pro-sumer (consumer-grade almost-professional) camera like a DVX100, a GL1 or GL2, etc. The better the camera, the better the captured information that is your movie... more resolution, better color, etc. Don't bother yet even thinking about HD. There are few if any DVD players that can play an HD DVD anyway. Go to DVXUSER.com or some other site that specializes in discussions and comparisons of miniDV cameras. Last, SOUND. Doesn't matter how good the captured image is, if the sound sux, the whole thing sux. DO NOT use the on-board microphone on the camera if you can help it. If it accepts a boom mike plugged into it, beg / borrow / steal one. It's worth it. Good luck!
